It arrived on Wednesday and we are planning to assemble it tomorrow, though the mattress isn't scheduled to arrive until Tuesday (gotta love drop-shipping). Then we will begin the arduous task of transferring the kids to their own room at night. I don't have the heart to force them into any sleeping situation if they are lonely or scared. We will start them both in the bottom bunk and hope that they eventually feel secure in that arrangement.

Speaking of sleep, Abigail's latest favorite movie is Disney's Sleeping Beauty. We've been watching that daily, sometimes twice a day. (This pregnancy has caused me to abandon many ideals, one of which was to limit TV time. Sometimes, TV is all you've got).

It's now 9:05pm and it's way past our bedtime. So goodnight.

hipster DIY

I used to be super-organized. Hyper-organized, even. That was when I had to take care of my own stuff only. Now I have to keep 4 of us organized and I'm failing miserably. I am so sleep-deprived that any down-time I have I sit and stare at the computer, looking to all the crafty hipster DIY simplification & organization sites for answers and I just come to the conclusions that 1. I am not a hipster, 2. I am wasting time looking for answers from hipster sources and 3. I still have a lot of reaching within my own self to do to find my own answers to the things that perplex me.

It's January 1, 2012. I am pregnant with our 3rd child, and I am super duper tired. I am relieved that the holidays are over. I'm not sure what's in store for this year except that I will be having a baby in July. We talk about moving, almost daily. We're so unsettled in this place it's just kind of a hovering gray cloud over us that won't budge. I'm too tired to try to tackle the disorganization. I look to my friends with older kids to remind me that this is a short phase in life. I am not the most patient, nor gracious, mother of small children. When this baby is born I'll have a 4.5 year-old, a 2.25 year old, and a newborn. Lawd help us.

Love, light, and peace to you this 2012.

Unpredictable

I know, as a Sagittarius, that just when someone gets used to us, we change, and it kind of messes with their expectations of how we will react to something. We are unpredictable. Ivan & I were born on the same day so imagine how confusing we are to each other.

I guess what I mean is that sometimes I can take a joke, but sometimes I can't. Sometimes I'm serious as a freaking heart-attack, but someone might be used to me being happy-go-lucky with a fabulous sense of humor, so they approach me with something they think I will enjoy, but instead I am appalled. The night of my wedding, which was actually Ivan's & my birthday too, I looked across the room & locked eyes with Junebug, my old bass player from the Catbirds- he & Catfish were my ceremony musicians. I flashed him a big smile. He later mentioned that until that moment, he didn't know which Cathy he was going to get. It all made sense to me at that point. Since then I have remembered numerous situations in which I must have confused the hell out of my friends by my reactions to something they said or did. Sorry guys. Love you.

Summer's almost over

I've been pretty introspective lately. I left Facebook (again) and am really trying to limit my time online. Seems I am constantly on here looking for answers to all the questions that exist in my mind. Then I see ads that are tailored just for me. Creeps me out.

Anyhoo, so far, getting offline is helping me clear my mind a bit. The kids need quite a bit of attention and I need to give it to them. Abs is starting preschool in a couple weeks! This will be her 2nd year. She loves it and I love how happy it makes her. She is so sweet. I can't believe she is almost 4. Chü is 16 months and is super cute and hilarious. He stomps around like a 800 lb gorilla and points at stuff and says "Yee-yee-ghee-ghee." Every night before bed, the 4 of us get in bed & the kids jump around and dive-bomb Ivan & me. It's the best party in the world.

My worm composter got fruit flies. Untraditional in style and service, there are no set menus as food is purchased that day and dishes are created to showcase the bounty's quality and freshness. Dude, I haven't written a song in over a decade! So it feels good to dust out some cobwebs.

I am making a map for a really cool art show called "All the Pretty Trees" at It Looks Like It's Open Gallery on June 17. I'm plotting the locations of all the art pieces and creating an art piece from that map.

I got 1000 red worms yesterday from One20 Farm in Columbus for my worm composter and we put them in their new home today. Now the trick is to make sure we keep the lights on so they stay in their new home... apparently when introduced to a new home, they often try to run away.

Baby Chü is walking all over the place, grabbing everything, Abigail is 3.5 and has developed quite a strong personality. If he'd had his way, I would have moved on to work in the DC area or New York, but I decided I was a home girl and wanted to live closer to family. But just the fact that he saw my potential to take on such a high-brow career path made me feel special. He saw the potential in a lot of people. He cheered us on, even when we were troubled. He did not judge anyone. He understood the human condition.

When I spoke to him last weekend, I was trying to keep it light and airy... I think he knew it would be the last time we'd speak. He was more solemn than usual. We made plans for me to come visit him in the spring. It snowed today.

Cool

My song, "Gone", is featured in a really groovy nationwide diary project called Leafless Diaries. For now, this is temporary. I need to ground myself a bit and get out of mindless cyberspace, so I can focus more on my life and kids and husband and home. I also need to focus a little more on my own website and blog. Social networking is fun and useful if you are able to follow through and be social and network in real life. Otherwise it just turns into a mind suck and makes you focus on what everyone else is doing, and what you're not.

So I blogged about it.

<img style="cursor:pointer; I think we're all finally getting better though. We've been hit with one snowstorm after another here in Columbus, and with that snow has come the homeowner's nightmare of ice dams in the gutters. My husband is an ice dam warrior though, and despite his horrible sinus infection, he's been out there on the ladder, chipping away at the dams and shoveling the snow away to allow the snow to melt and properly drain out the gutters. He's a hero.

Meanwhile, I am nesting like crazy, with 8 weeks left in this pregnancy, I am trying to get my domestic ducks in a row now, in order to allow for that much needed rest during the last month. I've been tackling the curtains. Trying to brighten up the place. My mom gave me some beautiful curtains for our bedroom but I ruined them through a laundry faux pas and shrank the flannel lining by putting them in the dryer on low heat. Dammit. I'm still using them though.

Our recent renovation to the back room and the removal of the swimming pool has brought much joy to our family, and this place really feels like home more than ever. I can't wait til spring so we can get working on the back yard and landscaping and such.

Anyhoo, we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of this babe, currently called "Chewy," because she was seen chewing during our ultrasound. We are trying to get Abigail ready for her arrival, but we don't really know if we're making any headway on that. All I know is that I am beginning to feel emotional about the transition of our little family of 3 to a bigger, more chaotic family of 4. I know we will adjust and we will be just fine, and I will love Chewy as much as I love Abigail. I am not worried about any of that. I guess I am not really worried about anything... I feel at peace at the whole prospect of our growing family. I am just hyper-aware that it is growing, and there is a limited time left at its current size. I'm sure this feeling is not unique to me. My mom even told me she went through a similar feeling when she went from 1 to 2.

Well it's a lovely sunny day outside so I suppose I should switch my attention to that and stop looking at the computer screen.

Hugs & kisses

Cat.

There is so much going on in our household I barely have time to write here! We are in the midst of filling in the pool, and we are renovating the back room of our house... Errr fixing, rather. I don't have the photos organized yet, but I will post them when I get a chance. The guy who built the house & lived here for 50 years did all kinds of crazy stuff to the house- converted the garage to a florida room with grand steps and brick floors and a wall of sliding glass doors, 16 ft across. Brick patio all around the pool, etc. It was quite pretty when I moved in 6 years ago, but it has become a hindrance and things began falling apart. So we have been demolishing all of it and throwing the debris into the pool hole. (we had the pool demolished first). Like I said, when I get a chance, I'll do a little photojournal of this work when I get organized.

I have done a couple shows with Mary Adam 12 and one with popCasey, plus I did a show with The Catbird Trio at the Thirsty Ear, opening up for One Under, which was a real blast.

Oh yeah and I started working a consulting job for a local aerial photography company. So far I haven't put a lot of hours in, but we're just doing some research & development work right now. It's just nice to have my own paycheck again. It will come in handy when this baby comes in April. :)

Random post-Comfest thoughts by Catwix

Comfest is done and over. It's time for the July 4th festivities. Summer is well on its way. It's been really cool the past few days and I appreciate that. We had a garage sale on Saturday & then I played with popCasey & Mary Adam 12 at Comfest and had a blast. But we were spent, so we went home right after the set. We went back on Sunday evening and had a nice, relaxing time as a little Comfest family.

Becoming a mom has changed me in so many ways. One thing that is changing is my sense of every-day style. My daughter is such a girlie girl, which I have never been, and she has brought the girlie girl out in me. I love it. I converted a thrift-store frumpy hippie dress to a cool little sundress for my Comfest set & it felt good to be girlie. I want to wear more girly clothes, especially because I never know when Ivan's going to grab the camera to take pictures of Abigail. I don't want to have to hide.

I don't have any shows scheduled right now, but I am enthusiastic about my involvement with these bands and look forward to future gigs. I love singing backup and being a sidewoman. It really takes a load off from the pressures of being the frontwoman. No matter what, people tend to look at the frontwoman with a critical eye. We've all done it. Over the years, however, I have definitely been fed my share of humility, and I have developed a deep respect for my lady peers. It takes guts to get up there & rock out, fully knowing that you're being watched & criticized. Over the years I have become a bit timid as a result of that knowing (paranoia?), but I am more & more inspired by these woman every day; their guts, style, smarts, beauty, and spunk give me hope. The guys are not chopped liver, either.

popCasey II

I'm gearing up for Comfest '09. We performed some pop tunes written by the late Brian Casey, a local composer who passed in Sept 08 at he age of 36. 36, dude.
His family and friends have been rallying, gathering his materials and catalogging his song recordings and scores, and handling them all with care and love. Steve and some of Brian's other close friends have been interpreting some of the raw recordings, and communicating with one another, sending the correct lyrics to songs in the 11th hour before a gig. It's very humbling, heartwarming, and touching. Deb Colvin-Tener, who was in a band with Brian called Hipswitch, opened the show with some of Brian's more folky tunes, and throughout the sets, she & Steve told their interpretations of the stories of where Brian's songs originated.

It was a fun evening, somewhat somber, very moving.

...

It made me think about how precious our time here is. I hope when my time here is up, I leave behind a little bit of inspiration, and not a big mess for my people to have to clean up. I know that sounds morbid & strange, but it's what I think about almost nightly, after everyone's gone to sleep. I think about how fast it's all going, and how much faster time flies when you are older. How 15 years now seems so much shorter than it did 15 years ago. How a person 15 years my senior seems so much closer to my age than someone 15 years my junior. It's all relative. But it all ends nonetheless. I hope whoever has to clean up my mess finds joy in what I have left behind.

I dug a rain garden the other day. Well sorta. See, we have a pool in the back yard. a 35 year-old, leaky, drainy in-ground pool. Sure it's nice on the hot days, but the maintenance is extraordinary, let alone the cost, and don't get me started on safety issues with an 18-month-old. We got a couple estimates to fill it in with dirt, and decided to just go ahead & keep it for another year.

Oh it's not that bad. The problem with it, though, is that it is not the highest point in the yard like it should be, so in the spring, when it rains, it fills up with grody brown yard water & floods. So I attempted to dig out a low spot to try to encourage all that rainwater to pool up behind the little retaining wall I built. I really hope the 5 years of work in the stormwater department at an engineering firm pays off and I did it right. Only time will tell. So in the meantime, I have some planting to do. I think I will just throw a bunch of seeds down & see what happens. I also fenced off a little area & planted some tomatoes, peppers, & eggplant. Eggplant? yes, eggplant. I will make some baba ganoush.

Abigail has been surprisingly good about staying away from the pool so far. She's a good girl. She likes to play in the dirt. I love that about her. She picks up a handful and pours it over the plants that I just planted. I really don't mind. I used to be so much more persnickety about things like that. What a drag it would be if I were still that way.

I recently found an old bff on facebook. It has been haunting for me because I haven't seen or talked to her in like 18 years. We were extremely close, and then she moved away & we completely lost touch. No mutual friends so I couldn't even ask anyone if they'd heard from her. I totally found her through a google search. Anyway, we've been catching up through email. I haven't written or typed anything so long since I wrote my master's thesis. It just flowed out of me- everything that I've been up to since I last saw her. A lifetime of personal information. I don't keep a diary anymore because I am afraid my descendants will want to jump off a bridge after reading it. No just kidding. Well not really.

It made me kind of realize the source of my writer's block I have been battling for several years. I was less inhibited & had less to protect while in my teens & twenties, so I felt more free to express myself and write heartfelt songs. I think as I grow I step more deeply into a world where self-restraint is the necessary norm, entering a professional, tight-lipped engineering profession where the less I say, the better off everyone fares. Well even after leaving that profession, I carry my residual inhibitions every day, protecting my close network of loving family and friends from my darkness. I don't want people to be sad that I am not necessarily the happy, bubbly person they want to see. I don't want to make my mother worry. I don't want to make other people feel uncomfortable by saying something too profoundly sad or intense. I don't want to scare people away.

But I think that keeping it all in makes it fester inside me, and something ugly wants to rear itself. I need to write. Whether I do it here, or in new songs, or in epic emails to my old friend who knows that dark side of me and isn't afraid of it. I just need to write. Because it sure feels good to get it all off my chest. She said the perfect word that describes this feeling: cathartic.

Through this healing dialogue with my old friend, I am inspired to look to the future, broken, knicked, bruised, bent, bandaged, imperfect, yet wise, practical, realistic, and hopeful. Maybe I can shed some anger and regret while I am at it. Imagine.

It's so hard to get organized. Especially with a young toddler. I try to let myself off the hook, but then it piles up, and then I panic. I think today is a panic day. So I am setting it straight. I am going to clean the living room.

haven’t blogged in a while...

I really don't have much to say, I just wanted to clear the cobwebs in my myspace & blogger profiles. I have been spending more time on Facebook lately. Talk about your entire life flashing before your eyes. I mean, DANG! People out of the woodwork. It is much easier to find people in Facebook than it is in myspace.

I have found that I am a LOT more shy and reserved than I was in high school. That became apparent when I met up with some kids from my high school during the holidaze. I just didn't know what to say so I made a bee line for my brother & cousin in the back of the bar.

Abigail is 14 months old, and walking like crazy. Babbling, and saying words like Cat, Dad, Thank Yeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuw, Wassat? She brings me books to read to her and gets super excited when I sit down with her to read. Sometimes I will find her sitting with a book, reading it aloud. 87% of the time, though, the book is upside down. It's very cute.

I'm not going to say that I am going to record another cd this year, because chances are I won't, but I am hoping to get myself organized and get some new stuff written. More cobwebs to clear in the writer's attic. These are the baby years for me so I am not going to push myself to write or perform more regularly until I feel it. Ya know?

Ivan & I would like to find a more appropriate house for us & sell our house, or maybe perhaps rent it out. Interested? 4 bed, 2 bath, & a pool... no garage though.

Anyhoo, I hope this finds you well. We'll be here, holding up the fort.

Cat

November is a big month for us. Abigail turned 1 on the 8th, and Ivan & I will celebrate our 35th birthday and 2nd anniversary on the 29th. But what's extra special about this particular November is that America has pulled together and accepted the notion that the world is changing and that we need to vote accordingly. We did it! I am working on my mojo to get some new stuff written for a new record in the next year or so. Let me tell you, I have been trying to achieve this silly goal for years! This year, I played with Steve Perakis on upright bass, Jay Gasper on guitar & pedal steel (*drool*), and Jimmy Castoe on drums- a 1.5 hour set with very little practice (once with Jay alone, once with Jay & Steve, and once with Steve & Jimmy). It was really awesome playing with these guys and I hope to do some more shows with them.
It was my baby girl Abigail's first mommy concert, so it was very special to me. :)

Catwix & The Catbirds are performing at the Columbus Arts Festival on Saturday, June 7, on the Club stage from 6:15-7:45 This is a correction from my previous post- I had thought it was Friday but I was totally wrong. One good thing, though, is that if you don't see this post and you go Friday anyway, you'll catch Miss Molly, an awesome local band who's been playing around town a lot lately.

They have moved the Arts Fest location- it's over by the CCAD & Art Museum.
Makes sense.
See Map

I received a bill to continue to have my regular website hosted where I'd been hosting it for years, and I didn't want to pay it anymore, so I thought I'd park my site here for a while & see how it goes. A couple of my musician friends have Blogger-type websites & they look good to me so I was inspired to follow suit. Blogger's free and easy. All the photos of me in my last website were old and sooo 20 lbs ago, and I am no longer trying so hard to become a rock star, so starting fresh was a sensible option. I will throw some more current pics up here as time permits.

I am a wife & mom now, and music has taken a back seat to that, naturally. I haven't finished writing a song in 8 years!! (not for lack of trying- I have serious A.D.D. and whenever I start one, I get distracted and move on to something else). I still have it on my agenda to record another cd, but it's on the back burner of my industrial-sized life stove. For now I am content with my domestic role.

SO anyhoo, thanks for checking in. I have a myspace page where I do a lot of correspondence so please visit me there! myspace.com/catwix

Love, Cathy

Catwix & The Catbirds will be performing again this year at the 2008 Columbus Arts Festival.
